The vineyards of Nîmois Nitoi
in Costières de Nîmes

The climate

The climate in the Costières de Nîmes is Mediterranean with continental influences. This results in warm, dry summers and mild winters, with abundant sunshine that ensures optimal grape ripening.

Additionally, the Mistral wind plays an important role: this cool, dry northern wind helps keep the vineyards dry, reducing the risk of disease and contributing to healthy grapes.

The terroir

The terroir is diverse, with soils primarily composed of poor sandy soils, red clay, and limestone, similar to the famous Châteauneuf-du-Pape. This soil structure provides excellent drainage while retaining heat, aiding grape ripening, especially during cooler nights. The vineyards are situated at an altitude of 50 to 150 meters above sea level, creating a temperate microclimate.

Winecrowing in Costières de Nîmes

Winegrowing in the Costières de Nîmes dates back to Roman times, when the Romans explored the region and planted vineyards. Wine production in the area gradually gained more attention and recognition, especially from the Middle Ages onward. The region was part of the major wine-producing areas of southern France.

In the 20th century, however, the region was often overshadowed by other wine areas in the Rhône.

In the 1980s, the wines of Costières de Nîmes began to receive greater attention and were recognized as a distinct appellation within the Rhône Valley. This led to the official AOC status (Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée) in 1986, confirming the quality and origin of the wines.
